Cody Rhodes began training in Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) in May of 2006. He became the OVW Champion, OVW Southern Tag Team champion, and OVW Television champion during his stay in the WWE developmental territory.
2007: Cody Rhodes debuts on WWE TV
Cody Rhodes first appeared on a WWE TV show at the 2007 Hall Of Fame to induct his father, Dusty Rhodes. Cody's first appearance WWE Raw was in July and he was involved in a feud with Randy Orton when Orton slapped Cody’s father, Dusty. In August, Cody began fighting in multiple matches against Hardcore Holly. During that time, Cody earned Holly’s respect and they formed a tag team. In December, Rhodes and Holly defeated Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch for the World Tag Team Championship.
2008: Legacy faction forms
Cody Rhodes and Hardcore Holly continued to be tag team champions until Night of Champions. They were scheduled to defend the titles against Ted Dibiase (Jr) and a mystery partner. Rhodes turned on Holly and Dibaise won and revealed Rhodes was the mystery partner, so together, they are now the World Tag Team Champions. In August, they lost them to John Cena and Batista, but regained them the next week. Rhodes and DiBiase were then joined by Manu. Rhodes and DiBiase then lost the tag titles to Kofi Kingston and CM Punk in October on RAW. Rhodes and Manu accepted an offer to form a group with Randy Orton called the Legacy. In a short period of time, Manu was kicked out and DiBiase joined the Legacy.
2009: Legacy feuds with DX
Cody Rhodes and Ted DiBiase continually helped Randy Orton in his matches, especially against Triple H. This caused Triple H to reform DX with Shawn Michaels to fight off the Legacy.
2010: "Dashing" Cody Rhodes
Cody Rhodes interference started backfiring and causing Randy Orton to lose. After a number of instances, Orton turned on Rhodes and DiBiase. In April, Rhodes was drafted to SmackDown. In June, he became known as “Dashing” Cody Rhodes. At Night of Champions, Rhodes and Drew McIntyre won the WWE Tag Team Championship in a tag team turmoil match. They lost them to John Cena and David Otunga at Bragging Rights.
2011: Cody Rhodes wins Intercontinental Championship
In January, Rhodes and Mysterio started feuding. In one of their early matches, Mysterio legitimately, accidentally, broke Rhodes’ nose and he needed surgery. Rhodes returned a few weeks later using a protective mask. In May, Cody started handing out paper bags to audience members and demanded that they wear them because their looks offended him. He would also put a paper bag over the head of his defeated opponents. Rhodes defeated Ezekiel Jackson to win the Intercontinental title in August. Cody would go on to attack Ted DiBiase as well as renew his feud with Randy Orton for the rest of the year.
2012: Rhodes Scholars
Cody Rhodes started a feud with the Big Show. Cody lost the Intercontinental title to him at WrestleMania XXVIII, but regained it from him at Extreme Rules. Cody then lost it to Christian at Over the Limit. In September, Cody and Damien Sandow formed a team called the Rhodes Scholars
2013: Cody Rhodes "fired" and rehired
In February, after multiple failed attempts at winning the WWE Tag Team Championships, the Rhodes Scholars went their separate ways, but agreed to remain friends. At Money in the Bank, Damien Sandow turned on Cody by throwing him off the ladder just as Cody was ready to grab the briefcase. In September, Cody and Randy Orton again renewed their feud. Cody Rhodes was punished for speaking out against the Authority’s rule of Triple H. Triple H demanded Cody to face Orton in a non-title match. When Cody lost, he was “fired”. Behind the scenes, he was given time off as he got married to Brandi Rhodes. Goldust was put in the same predicament and lost. Dusty begged the Authority to rehire his sons. At Battleground, both got their jobs back by beating the WWE Tag Team Champions, Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins. The next week, they beat them again, this time winning the belts.
2014: Debut of Stardust
Cody Rhodes and Goldust lost the WWE Tag Team Championship to the New Age Outlaws at the Royal Rumble. After they went on a losing streak, Cody told Goldust to find himself a better partner. Goldust was unsuccessful with several partners. In June, Cody debuted the Stardust character. Stardust and Goldust reunited as a team. At Night of Champions, they defeated The Usos to win the WWE Tag Team Championship. They lost the titles to Damien Mizdow and The Miz at Survivor Series.
2015: Stardust feud with Stephen Amell
Goldust and Stardust again started losing with Stardust blaming and turning on Goldust. He then began a storyline feud with actor Stephen Amell. Amell and Nevell defeated Stardust and Wade Barrett. In September, Goldust and The Ascension became a unit known as The Cosmic Wasteland.
2016: Cody Rhodes requests his release from WWE
Stardust lost most of his matches for the first quarter of the year. In May, he asked for and was granted his release from WWE as he was frustrated with the creative team and didn’t want to portray the Stardust character any longer.
Life after WWE (2016-2018)
Cody Rhodes was unable to use the Rhodes name as WWE had owned it. Cody announced on social media that he wants to go to several independent promotions and has a list of opponents he wanted to face to prove he is a better wrestler than what WWE portrayed him as. He wrestled for PWG, Evolve, North East Wrestling, Ring of Honor, and more, including winning some of their titles. He wrestled for TNA and ROH at the same time. Cody was unsuccessful trying to capture the TNA title from Eddie Edwards. In December of 2016, Cody made his New Japan debut as the newest member of the Bullet Club. On June 11, he failed in his quest to become IWGP Champion as he lost to Kazuchika Okada. On June 23, 2017, he won the ROH Title from Christopher Daniels. He lost it to Dalton Castle on December 15, 2017. At All In PPV on May 13, 2018, he defeated Nick Aldis for the NWA title. He lost it back to him at the NWA 70th Anniversary show.
2019: Cody Rhodes signs with All Elite Wrestling, becomes VP
Cody signed a five-year contract to wrestle for and become one of the Executive Vice Presidents for AEW. At Double or Nothing, Cody defeated Dustin Rhodes. MJF formed an association with Cody. Cody and the Young Bucks were known as The Elite. Chris Jericho’s Inner Circle and The Elite entered into a feud. Cody had an upcoming match at Full Gear for Jericho’s AEW Championship. Cody announced that if he lost to Jericho at Full Gear, he would never challenge for the title again. Cody lost to Jericho and did not challenge for the title after that match. After the match, MJF turned on Cody.
2020: Cody Rhodes feuds with MJF, Brodie Lee, Darby Allin, Shaquille O'Neal, Sammy Guevara
Cody demanded MJF give him a match. MJF agreed so only if Cody can beat a number of opponents that MJF puts in front of him. Cody was successful in those matches, but lost to MJF at Revolution. At Double or Nothing, Cody won the inaugural TNT title by defeating Lance Archer in the tournament final. Mike Tyson presented Cody with the title belt. Cody lost the title to Brodie Lee in August. In October, Cody regained the title from Lee in a Dog Collar match. In November, Cody was able to acquire the rights to use the Rhodes last name once again. Rhodes lost the TNT title to Darby Allin at Full Gear. In March on Dynamite, Rhodes and Red Velvet defeated Shaquille O’Neill and Jade Cargill. In December, Rhodes defeated Sammy Guevera to win the TNT title.
2021: Various feuds
Cody Rhodes had several matches with members of The Factory and Malakai Black. In December, he became a 3-time TNT Champion.
2022: Cody Rhodes leaves AEW
Cody Rhodes lost the TNT title back to Sammy Guevera in January. This would be his last match in AEW as he and his wife, Brandi, had not come to terms on a new contract.
2022: Cody Rhodes returns to WWE at WrestleMania 38
Cody Rhodes made his WWE return being the surprise opponent for Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 38. The next night on RAW, Rhodes announced that he returned to WWE to win the WWE Championship in memory of his father, Dusty Rhodes. Rhodes again defeated Rollins at WrestleMania Backlash. Another match between them was scheduled for Hell in a Cell. Before the event, Rhodes suffered a pectoral muscle tear which was torn right off the bone. He entered the Hell in a Cell match anyway. The crowd gasped when they saw how discolored and bruised his chest was. Rhodes went on to win the match. He underwent surgery and is expected out the remainder of the year.
