At a time when AEW has lost some key names behind the scenes, the promotion is losing another wrestler. QT Marshall notably departed from the promotion after growing frustration built up.
Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported that Shawn Spears is the latest star to leave the promotion.
Spears had been part of the AEW roster since the promotion launched in 2019 after his WWE run as Tye Dillinger, where he got over with his ten-count gimmick.
He most notably feuded with Cody Rhodes in the early days of the promotion, where he accidentally busted open the former AEW star with a chair shot to the head. He hasn’t wrestled for the promotion since September on AEW All Out Zero Hour. His last match on a Dynamite was in May 2022.
Spears and his wife Cassie Lee announced earlier this week that they’re expecting their second child.
Per the report, “Spears becomes a free agent on January 1, and the departure was amicable between he and All Elite Wrestling.”
Following the news, Spears put out the following statement:
What a wonderful time it has been.
Thank you @AEW for allowing me to be there from the ground level. It’s been a fantastic 5 years of growth and personal development.
This is a personal choice and one that is best for me and my family at this time.
Thank you to all, staff…
