Dominik Mysterio’s heel turn was a callback to a classic WWE storyline

Dominik Mysterio turned heel on Saturday at the Clash at the Castle event when he attacked on his father, Rey Mysterio.

Edge and Rey vs. Judgment Day (Damian Priest and Finn Balor) took place. After Dominik helped Rey and Edge win the bout after tripping Balor, Dominik kicked Edge in the nuts. When Rey confronted him, the son of the legendary pro wrestler clotheslined him.

As seen below, this was a callback to the memorable feud between Rey and the late great Eddie Guerrerro in 2005:

In early 2005, Eddie and Rey won the WWE Tag Team Championship, which started the storyline as they worked a singles match at WrestleMania 21, where Rey went over. Guerrero looked visibly frustrated, planting the seeds for a heel turn.

They eventually lost the Tag Titles to MNM. In the rematch to regain the titles, Guerrero cost them the match as he abandoned Rey. On an episode of SmackDown, Guerrero attacked Rey.

Guerrero threatened to reveal a secret about the Mysterio family following the attack. Eddie’s family and Rey pleaded with Guerrero not to reveal the secret. This set up a match at the Great American Bash with the stipulation that if Eddie lost, he would not tell the secret. Despite losing the match, the following week on SmackDown, he did reveal the secret – Mysterio’s 7-year-old son Dominik was really Eddie’s son.

Guerrero did a series of videos entitled “Eddie’s Bedtime Stories” where he shared more details about how he had a child out of wedlock, Dominik. He claimed Rey and his wife were having trouble conceiving that he left Dominik on their doorstep for them to raise.

They had a ladder match at SummerSlam with the custody of Dominik on the line, with Rey winning.
