Malakai Black Addresses His AEW Hiatus, Reveals Minor Injury

Malakai Black has addressed concern among fans regarding an injury that he has been rumored to deal with, which has led to speculation that this is why he hasn’t wrestled a singles match in quite some time.

Black formed a tag team with Brody King, called the Kings of the Black Throne, before bringing in Buddy Matthews as House of Black, where they compete in the trios division shortly after his AEW arrival.

Black has not competed in a singles match in AEW in 440 days, as Black’s last singles match was against Penta Oscuro in June 2022. He holds a 14-2 record in tag team action this year.

House of Black dropped the Trios Titles to The Acclaimed and Billy Gunn at All In, marking Black’s last match.

In a video shared on his Instagram story, he addressed his absence from AEW television, noting he doesn’t have a back injury, is not sure why he hasn’t been booked in a singles match, and is dealing with a slight calf tear and knee hyperextension.

”This is something I want to address. I understand this always comes from a perception of caring, so before I say anything, I appreciate that people care, and it comes from a good place. About a year ago, I made a video about rehabbing a back injury I had, and the video shows the process of overcoming the injury, strengthening, etc. After the video was posted, people started running with the idea that ‘Oh, he has a bad back and therefore A, B, and C,’ which is not the case at all.

And for some reason, it has found its way back, and the narrative is,” Well, he’s not had singles matches because he has a bad back, he nearly retired because of it.” And none of that is not true. Why haven’t I had singles matches? I don’t know. I think it’s because they wanted us as The House of Black to do six-mans.

I was also not in six-mans to hide said non-existing injury. Again, rest assured I do not have a bad back. The reason why I’m at home right now is due to a minor injury, which is I had a slight calf tear and hyperextension in my knee, which is almost nursed back and almost ready to go back on the road. I appreciate the concern, but the reality is I’m fine and you will see me sooner rather than later, but again, I appreciate the concern.”
