Pat McAfee hasn’t been seen on WWE television in months, but that appears to be changing soon.
Although McAfee is currently signed to a multi-year contract with WWE, last fall, he agreed to a deal with ESPN to be part of the College GameDay program on Saturday mornings. That would’ve been a rough travel schedule to go from wherever SmackDown was on a Friday night and then fly to the location of that week’s College GameDay to make it in time for the early morning broadcast.
While the SmackDown color commentator was up for the challenge, WWE told him to focus on the ESPN gig, and when he was free of college football season, they would have him back. It’s still unclear whether this means he will be back calling the action on SmackDown by replacing Wade Barrett.
Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported today that there is internal speculation that McAfee will return to work for WWE soon. One source said they heard his name mentioned for the Royal Rumble.
Sapp wrote, “Several talent were speculating that they believe Pat McAfee could be back soon, with one saying they’d heard his name mentioned for the Royal Rumble.”
