John Cena is slated to wrestle WWE United States Champion Austin Theory in the opening match of the WrestleMania 39 night one card on Saturday night, but there had been several other wrestlers who pushed to work with the former WWE Champion.
Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported that dating back to last summer, “there was top-level talent in WWE who were angling to work with Cena on the WrestleMania show.” Several wrestlers got word that Cena was planning to be part of the show and was open to who he would wrestle.
Per the report, there were people within WWE at one point “who were pushing for Cody Rhodes to face John Cena, even though by August, it was pretty well determined that Cody would be facing Roman Reigns.”
As exclusively reported by WrestlingNews.co, WWE planned to do Cena vs. Logan Paul at the event as of the fall, but plans changed. The match is reportedly on the table for SummerSlam.
As of December, WWE had nailed down Theory wrestling Cena before they finalized Rollins vs. Logan Paul.
This WrestleMania match will mark Cena’s first single match at the show in front of a live crowd that was announced in advance since WrestleMania 31 in 2015 against Rusev.
