Arn Anderson has never been shy about his view on promotions stacking up championships, and a fan question on his ARN podcast gave him the chance to lay it out again.
Asked whether he thinks AEW has too many titles these days, Anderson said the risk is not to any one belt but to the whole lot of them.
“I think it can lessen the value of all of them as a whole if you have too many,” Anderson said.
For him, the number matters less than what is built around each one.
“It just depends on who is trying to win it, who’s the champion, and the story needs to be in place for it to mean the most,” Anderson said.
He then worked through the old debate about which way the relationship runs, and landed on the idea that it can go either direction depending on the performer.
“You don’t make the title, the title makes you,” Anderson said, before allowing that the reverse holds in some cases, adding that a championship on its own “don’t get you over.”
The same thinking came up later in the show when a listener asked what he made of TNA introducing a new women’s television title. TNA unveiled the Knockouts Television Championship at Slammiversary in June, with a 16-woman tournament to crown the inaugural champion beginning on the July 2 episode of Impact, and the belt set to be defended exclusively on the weekly show.
Anderson’s answer was the same principle in a single sentence.
“Depends on who the champion is and what they make it,” Anderson said.
