Cody Rhodes is expected to remain the Undisputed WWE Champion despite the eye injury he suffered at WrestleMania 42 night one.
According to Bodyslam, Rhodes is not currently expected to relinquish the title as a result of the damage sustained during his match with Randy Orton. The report states that WWE will continue to monitor his health in the coming days ahead of SmackDown.
“Cody Rhodes is not expected to have to relinquish the Undisputed WWE Championship as of right now. WWE will continue to monitor the health of Rhodes in the coming days ahead of SmackDown,” Bodyslam reports.
Rhodes retained the title over Orton in the night one main event but left the match in rough shape. An Orton punch opened him up during the closing sequence, leaving him bloodied and with his left eye visibly swollen shut by the time the final bell rang. He was placed in concussion protocol on the post-show and had his WWE World appearance on Sunday canceled as a result.
The severity of the injury remains unclear at this stage. While Rhodes is expected to hold onto the championship, whether he will need significant time away from television to recover remains to be seen.
Should an absence be required, WWE has a natural in-story explanation readily available given that Orton attacked Rhodes with the title and delivered a punt kick following the match, a post-match beatdown that could easily be used to write Rhodes off programming while he heals.
