Backstage News On Jey Uso’s Short WWE World Heavyweight Title Reign

According to a new report from Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Jey Uso’s recent 51-day reign as World Heavyweight Champion was never intended to be a long one. The decision was reportedly made to have him win the title at WrestleMania 41 with the understanding that he would lose it back to GUNTHER in the near future.

This long-term plan was put in place to ensure GUNTHER was the reigning World Heavyweight Champion heading into his high-profile match against the returning Goldberg. That match is scheduled for the Saturday Night’s Main Event television special on July 12 in Atlanta, Georgia.

By having the world title on the line, WWE adds more prestige to Goldberg’s retirement match and creates a major attraction for the show, which is scheduled to go head-to-head with AEW’s All In: Texas event.

While Jey Uso’s title reign was brief, it served to further legitimize him as a main event singles star after years of success in the tag team division. Despite the title loss, he’s still mega over with the fans.
