The John Cena Classic is being treated internally as a still-developing concept, with WrestleVotes reporting on Fightful Select that neither a date nor a venue has been locked in following the announcement at Saturday’s WWE Backlash.
Per WrestleVotes on Fightful Select, sources spoken to in the days since the announcement indicated no firm logistics are in place. One source said an early December timeframe would make the most logistical sense for WWE’s calendar, and would line up with the one-year anniversary of Cena’s retirement match against GUNTHER at Saturday Night’s Main Event in December 2025.
WrestleVotes also reported that Netflix expressed interest in hosting the event on its platform almost immediately after the Backlash announcement. That arrangement has not been finalized. The same reporting indicated very little about the concept has been locked in at this stage.
The new update aligns with what Dave Meltzer reported in a Wrestling Observer Daily Update, describing the John Cena Classic as a work in progress, with WWE not having decided on the event’s format before the announcement. WWE wanted the reveal to happen at Backlash, which led to the announcement going out before the full details were finalized.
Cena announced the concept during Saturday’s PLE, framing it as a single-night event featuring main roster against NXT matches, with a fan vote determining the inaugural John Cena Classic Champion regardless of who actually wins the in-ring portion.
“You, the audience, the fan, will vote to crown the champion of the John Cena Classic. Every participant qualifies, which also means for the first time in history, a superstar might not win their match, but their hustle could earn your respect, win your heart, win your vote, and you can still crown them the John Cena Classic Champion.”
Speculation has been divided in the days since on whether the event will function as a tournament with wrestlers advancing on popular vote, or simply a stacked card with all participants eligible for the final championship vote. Questions have also been raised about the workings of the fan vote itself, including whether it will be open to the general public or gated behind the Club WWE membership program Cena announced alongside the Classic concept.
Cena addressed the early online skepticism on X over the weekend. “The John Cena Classic may not be perfect by any means, yet it’s authentically me (I am not perfect either) and reflects my values and beliefs. I’m aware that there is the risk it might be a total failure, and I’m not afraid of that and believe it’s still worth stepping ‘in the arena.'”
Bayley reacted publicly to a reported pitch to have her face NXT Women’s North American Champion Tatum Paxley at the Classic. The full participant pool and qualifier format have not been announced.
