Backstage News On John Cena’s WWE Backlash Appearance

John Cena will be at Backlash on May 9 in Tampa, Florida, as part of the terms of his current WWE contract, according to Dave Meltzer.

Meltzer addressed the situation on Wrestling Observer Radio, confirming that Cena’s deal with WWE calls for a number of appearances, including Backlash. His exact role at the event has not been determined.

“The situation there is that he’s on Backlash. I’m not sure what the role will be because he said he’s never gonna wrestle again. They signed him to a contract that called for a number of appearances, so this is one of those appearances. His deal called for these things,” Meltzer said.

He also expressed some skepticism about the timing of Cena’s return, given how recently he appeared at WrestleMania 42.

“I mean, to me it’s kinda weird because he just did WrestleMania and it was supposed to be something special. And here we are a couple of weeks after WrestleMania and he’s doing it again. So it feels like for a big guest like that coming back so quick and having him again, kinda seems like why would you do it? But I think the mentality is that John Cena is important and getting him on TV is important. He’s signed for a number of dates, so that’s one of them. That’s it,” Meltzer said.

Cena hosted both nights of WrestleMania 42 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on April 18 and 19, his first WWE television appearances since retiring from in-ring competition in December. Backlash takes place Sunday, May 9, at Amalie Arena in Tampa, Florida.
