Backstage news on plans for WWE Superstar Spectacle

The first-ever “WWE Superstar Spectacle” is slated to be taped on Friday, January 22 ahead of SmackDown. WWE recently opened registration for it as virtual fans will be able to watch the taping inside the WWE ThunderDome.

The call time for fans is 8:30 p.m IST / 9:30 a.m EST and is set to be two hours in length for the broadcast on Sony Networks in India on Tuesday, January 26.

The original report by POST Wrestling last month noted that this has been a long-term project where plans have evolved and shifted many times.

Dave Meltzer reported in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the idea for this special has been heavily talked about since November. He also confirmed previous reports about how this was supposed to be a one-night tournament. While plans for it will “probably change multiple times” before the event is taped, WWE’s eventual goal is to make it a weekly TV show that features Indian talent. There is also hope that this venture will be profitable.

This would be similar to NXT UK. Since the NXT UK brand doesn’t generate a lot of money for the company, WWE is viewing India as #2 behind NXT in the United States as the belief is they could get more money in a TV deal.

Some main roster talent advertised for it includes Jinder Mahal, Rey Mysterio, Charlotte Flair, AJ Styles, Bayley, The New Day, Shinsuke Nakamura, Cesaro, Dolph Ziggler and Robert Roode, Ricochet, and WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair.
