Baron Corbin On Original MITB Plans: I Think Vince McMahon Saw Me Becoming World Champion

Tom Pestock, formerly Baron Corbin in WWE, appeared on the latest episode of Insight With Chris Van Vliet to discuss a wide range of topics, including the original plans for his time as the Money in the Bank contract holder.

Corbin won the contract in June 2017 at the Money in the Bank PPV event. Two months later, on an August episode of SmackDown, John Cena was working a non-title match against WWE Champion Jinder Mahal. As Cena was pinning Mahal, Corbin attacked him, leading to a DQ finish.

Corbin cashed in the contract but went after Cena instead of Mahal as the bell sounded. This allowed Mahal to roll up Corbin to retain the title, making Corbin the third wrestler to unsuccessfully cash in the contract and the second to lose a cash-in match. This was at a time when WWE was trying to expand further into the India market.

“I think Vince [McMahon] saw me becoming world champion, and I think that winning that he’s like, ‘You’re going to hold it for a while.’ Because, I think Jinder being champ also played a part of, not only you know him doing his thing because he’s an incredible performer, but also they were trying to get, you know, acertain demographic of an audience. And like they had no intentions of changing that title at that time. So it was to carry it, and it was eventually to take it off of Jinder, but obviously, it did not come to fruition.”
