Brock Lesnar is the WWE’s Universal Champion, but “The Beast” intends on reclaiming the UFC heavyweight championship that once sat around his waist several years ago.
Lesnar was cage-side at the UFC 226 pay-per-view (PPV) to witness Daniel Cormier capture the UFC heavyweight title from Stipe Miocic via first round knockout. After the win, “DC” called Lesnar into the cage and the pair engaged in a shoving match. UFC President Dana White confirmed later on in the night that he intends to make the fight happen.
He re-entered the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) drug testing pool earlier this month and will be eligible to return to Octagon action in January. This has been a hot topic amongst both the professional wrestling and mixed martial arts (MMA) community.
Professional wrestling fans are upset that their prime champion on Monday Nights isn’t on RAW on a consistent basis, and only defends his title once every few months. MMA fans aren’t fond of the WWE-esk style of promotion taken by Lesnar and “DC” ahead of their fight, thinking the shoving match at UFC 226 was fake.
WWE Hall Of Famer Booker T recently joined the Sam Roberts’ Wrestling Podcast to talk about Lesnar’s MMA return. Booker T took aim at MMA fans and said they need to realize that this is entertainment, and in the words of former WCW President Eric Bischoff, “controversy creates cash”:
“I think the MMA fans need to realize that it is entertainment, first and foremost,” Booker T said. “In every sport, I don’t care what it is, controversy always seems to bring more eyes to the sport. Whether it is because of steroids in Baseball that caused Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire to hit more home runs, or whether it was Muhammad Ali talking about Joe Frazier, there was eyes on him, same with Brock Lesnar.
“With him coming to UFC and causing havoc, I know a lot of fans aren’t wanting it. I am sure that the UFC is eating it up. To bring – not to harp on the CM Punk thing – but to bring CM Punk into the UFC it was all about buyrates. Giving the fans from the pro wrestling world to get into the UFC world because right now the UFC is struggling for stars. Let’s just get it out there. “DC” wouldn’t have had to move from Light Heavyweight to Heavyweight if he had someone to fight.
“That is just clear to me. Brock Lesnar coming over, who better to fight DC than a Brock Lesnar? I mean, come on. It’s one of those chances there again to make the professional wrestler look back, but Brock Lesnar is the real deal and is capable of going there and beating Daniel Cormier.”
