Chelsea Green has confirmed she broke an orbital bone on Friday’s SmackDown, six days after winning the Interim WWE Women’s Championship.
Green went to the emergency room after the show and posted a video on Saturday explaining what had happened, having initially hoped to keep it quiet.
“I did get injured last night. Stuff happens. It’s live television. It’s wrestling. It’s an occupational hazard. I ended up in the emergency room and I have a broken orbital bone. It looks amazing, all things considered. It feels awful, but looks pretty amazing. I have no idea what that means for me.”
She said this one has not landed the way her previous injuries have.
“Usually, you guys have seen me play into every single injury. But this feels different, obviously. It feels frustrating. I’m upset. I feel like if I didn’t have bad luck I’d have no luck at all. So I just need to take a little bit more time to process and to heal from the head trauma that is going on right now. Then, we’ll see what happens.”
“We’re just going to take it day by day.”
She has not given a timetable and WWE has not commented on her status.
The injury happened in a tag match in which Green and Tiffany Stratton challenged Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid for the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship. Jacy Jayne interfered and Henley pinned Green, which under the stipulation earned Jayne a shot at Stratton’s Women’s United States Championship next week. Nia Jax and Lash Legend attacked both women afterwards, with Jax holding the Women’s Title above her head.
It was Green’s second segment of the night, after an interim title celebration that Fatal Influence interrupted. She had also worked Thursday’s live event in Fairfax, Virginia, teaming with Charlotte Flair and Stratton.
Bryan Alvarez reported that Green had been hurt during the match before she gave the detail herself.
The timing leaves WWE with both women in the championship picture unavailable. Rhea Ripley, the reigning WWE Women’s Champion, confirmed on August 6 that she had undergone surgery on her right knee, having been out since June with a slightly torn meniscus. The interim title exists because of that absence, and Green won it in a five-way ladder match at SummerSlam on August 2, beating Flair, Jade Cargill, Stratton and Lash Legend.
Adam Pearce had said the interim champion would eventually face Ripley to settle the title. Neither woman has a return date.
