Drew McIntyre is back in the ring, at least for training. The former Undisputed WWE Champion posted a short video to X on Friday of himself running the ropes, captioned simply “Reps.”
McIntyre has not wrestled since April 18, when he lost to Jacob Fatu in an Unsanctioned Match on Night 1 of WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas. That match closed out a busy first half of the year for him. McIntyre beat Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship in a Three Stages of Hell match on the January 9 episode of SmackDown in Berlin, escaping the cage after Fatu returned and attacked both men. Rhodes won the title back on the March 6 SmackDown, in a match SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis ordered after McIntyre cost Rhodes his chance to win the Elimination Chamber. McIntyre’s issues with Fatu carried through to WrestleMania. Fatu had blamed McIntyre for the October 2025 backstage attack that kept him off television for several months, which McIntyre denied.
His time away since then has gone to film work. McIntyre wrapped his role in the Highlander reboot starring Henry Cavill in June, according to WrestleTalk, before moving on to The Last Druid, an action film starring Russell Crowe that was shot in Spain. Fightful noted both films are expected to be released in 2027.
PWInsider Elite reported in August that McIntyre was back in the United States after filming wrapped, but that there had been no talk yet of writing him back into WWE storylines. The report added that he had been working on other projects for the company, including a lead acting role.
Earlier this month, Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp said on a Fightful Select Q&A that he ran into McIntyre at a Pro Wrestling Symphony show in Nashville.
“He said that he really missed wrestling and he really wished that he could have worked a South American tour. He said that he enjoyed those. He’s not really used to being off this long, but he’s been working on, like several movies since WrestleMania,” Sapp said.
“He’s still working out in the ring. He looks great, looks huge, talked about how a lot of the work that he’s been doing has been working on basically joint space in his body and stuff like that. But he didn’t give me a timetable or a return date or anything like that.”
This has raised the possibility of McIntyre returning in time for Money in the Bank, which takes place October 10 at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. WWE has not announced a return date for McIntyre.
The briefcase has history for McIntyre. He won the men’s ladder match at Money in the Bank 2024 in Toronto and cashed in the same night during Damian Priest’s World Heavyweight Championship defense against Seth Rollins, only for CM Punk to attack him with a steel chair and the title belt. Priest pinned McIntyre to retain.
Four wrestlers have qualified for this year’s men’s ladder match so far, according to WWE: Bron Breakker, Je’Von Evans, United States Champion Trick Williams and Penta. Williams defends the United States Championship against Baron Corbin in a Steel Cage match on the September 25 episode of SmackDown in Indianapolis. CM Punk, Gunther and Finn Bálor meet in a triple threat on the same show for another spot in the match.
