Drew McIntyre says he pitched cutting off someone’s limb with his sword at WrestleMania, and was turned down.
McIntyre told Joe Vulpis on The Joe Vulpis Podcast that he spent years pushing to actually use the claymore he carried to the ring.
“I carried a claymore to the ring for years, and I pitched for years to shank people. I was always turned down. I wonder why,” McIntyre said. “I cut the top rope and the middle rope. I put the sword through the ring. I put the sword through tables, and I did suggest for Mania one time. I think it was, yeah, Vince was still in charge.”
He said the idea came from how films use amputee actors for battle scenes.
“I was like, Saving Private Ryan. You know, they hire, you know, people that are missing limbs for the key scenes, make them more realistic. Can we hire somebody who’s missing like a lower leg? And I just lop their leg off, and the opponent moves by mistake, or somebody’s reaching for something, they duck, and I go, ah, I cut an arm off.”
“Why do I have the sword if I’m not using on anybody? I look like an idiot,” he said.
McIntyre first brought the sword to the ring for his WWE Championship match against Randy Orton on the November 16, 2020, episode of Raw. He said at the time that the sword and pyro were Vince McMahon’s addition. McMahon ran WWE creative until he retired in July 2022.
McIntyre said he finally uses the sword on screen in Agent of Shadows, the WWE and ReelShort microdrama he stars in, which premieres on ReelShort on October 23.
“I will tell everyone now, Agent of Shadows, the sword is there and I shank people. So, finally, you’ll see Drew use a sword on the screen.”
McIntyre has not wrestled since losing to Jacob Fatu in an Unsanctioned Match on Night 1 of WrestleMania 42 on April 18. He said he is not giving a return date but that he will be back “bigger, faster, and sharper-tongued than ever before.”
