JBL has weighed in on the Cody Rhodes vs GUNTHER Undisputed WWE Championship match at Clash in Italy, telling Something to Wrestle listeners that he would make GUNTHER wait for the title win despite acknowledging the inevitability of GUNTHER’s eventual championship reign.
Rhodes defends the Undisputed WWE Championship against GUNTHER at Clash in Italy on May 31 in Turin.
“I think you make them wait again. It’s a heel. People are starting to cheer for him, which is fine. You want an attraction. You don’t care if the whole crowd’s booing, or GUNTHER is doing a great job as a heel, and whether they’re taking him as a babyface or not. Sometimes that’s booking, sometimes that’s other things that are involved, but he’s getting over, period. And I think it’s not a question of if, it’s a question of when, and I don’t know if it’s going to be this time or not.”
He talked about the totality-of-the-show booking thinking.
“I’ve said we shouldn’t have title shifts on the other titles. You kind of want one, to give Italy something. It’s kind of the thinking when you go into shows like this, but what’s the totality of what you’re giving the people? So, I don’t know if this is the kind of, the one, the gift for Italy. It may be. I think GUNTHER is going to win it. I just don’t know when he’s going to win it, and I don’t know if this is the right time or not. As far as I’m concerned, forget about the totality of the show, I would make GUNTHER wait just a little bit.”
JBL discussed his deep admiration for GUNTHER’s character work.
“He is a hell of a heel. That guy’s what a worker he is. I’m such a fan of GUNTHER. We just had to get a colophon on our Brisco and Bradshaw show, because it’s the 30th anniversary of our 40th. Yeah, 40th anniversary.”
The Brisco and Bradshaw reference is to JBL’s earlier tag team work with Gerald Brisco in the late 1990s.JBL discussed the GUNTHER comparison.
“He is a prize for WWE, and so it’s not a matter of if it’s a matter of when, and I don’t know if I’d do it this time or not. I think it’s fine if you do, I think it’s fine if you don’t.”
“Nikita was a real freaking heel. Unbelievable. Barry Darso, they went to high school together. Somebody told Barry Darso, Hey, they got this legit Russian there in the Carolinas, and the guy’s a badass. Very little high school with him. He just loved to be a heel. Very few guys love to be a heel. GUNTHER loves to be a heel.”
