JBL said Ron Simmons saved him from a group of men who pulled knives on him in a bar in Canada by running across the bar and cutting what JBL called the greatest promo he has ever heard in his life.
Speaking on the Six Feet Under podcast, JBL said he got into a fight in the corner of a bar and a group of men pulled out knives and had him backed against the wall.
“I thought, shit, I’m gonna die in Canada, of all places,” JBL said.
JBL said he saw Simmons on the other side of the bar and Simmons came running across to help. JBL described Simmons as looking like “a freaking Avenger” charging toward the fight. Simmons grabbed a beer bottle off a table on the way.
“He cuts a promo, to this day, the greatest promo I’ve ever heard in my life,” JBL said. “And he ends it with, ‘I’m gonna hit the first white mother that moves.'”
JBL said his first reaction was to cheer. Then he realized the problem.
“I’m the only white mother,” JBL said. “And I thought, why would he hit me? I’m trying to debate this. And Ron looks around. He goes, ‘Not you.’ It was like an APA skit. ‘Not you.'”
JBL said the men with the knives looked at both of them and decided they were not worth the trouble.
“These guys look at us like, ‘These guys are crazy. They’re nuts. Just get them out of here,'” JBL said. “So we got out of there.”
JBL said Simmons in a promo was untouchable. “Ron in a promo, you didn’t want to follow him with anything. He was too good,” JBL said.
JBL said he refuses to do appearances without Simmons. “People call me, say, ‘You want to do an appearance?’ No, I’m not gonna get on a plane. ‘Ron’s there.’ Okay, all right, yeah, go,” JBL said.
