Tom Brady’s feud with Logan Paul boiled over at Fanatics Fest, TMZ Sports has reported ongoing conversations between Brady and WWE, and JBL would like to see where it goes.
Speaking on Something to Wrestle, JBL made his position plain.
“I hope we do. I think it’d be awesome. I think it’d be so much fun,” JBL said. “He did something with Cody. I saw him on a clip with Cody as well, so he’s obviously doing a lot with WWE. There’s some talk that’s going on.”
He said the appeal is obvious given who Brady is now.
“Possibly the greatest quarterback of all time. You could argue Bradshaw, Montana, never lost a Super Bowl, but Brady won seven. He has an argument for the goat debate,” JBL said. “One of the best commentators, highest paid commentators out there right now. He’s all over the place.”
Money, JBL said, is not the lever.
“Obviously, you’re not going to be able to pay him enough to make it worth his while. It depends on what worth his while means,” JBL said. “But if he wants to do it, I think he would do it. Apparently he’s got some real interest here.”
He also came away impressed by what he saw at Fanatics Fest, where Brady posted the highest score on a boxer arcade machine alongside Cody Rhodes and Justin Bieber.
“I saw him hitting the bag at the boxer arcade machine. Brother, what a punch he has,” JBL said. “Of course, he’s a great athlete, but God, what a punch he has. He’s obviously in great shape still, and you might see him do something.”
His guess on format is a tag rather than a singles match.
“It’s hard to believe you’d see him in a singles match, but you might. I would think it’d be more like a tag match, but you never know. That would be huge if he did,” JBL said. “To pay this off, it’s going to have to be more than just being in the corner of somebody. Maybe that’s what the payoff is, but I think it’s going to be something with him in the ring.”
JBL credited Paul with making WWE a place someone like Brady would consider.
“Logan Paul is checking all the boxes, man. This guy’s good. What a boost he is to WWE,” JBL said. “And if you get Brady, it’s mainly going to be because of Logan Paul.”
On the wider complaint that WWE leans on celebrities too heavily, JBL had no patience for it, and pointed to a stretch when nobody would take the call.
“We couldn’t get anybody in the mid ’90s. Until we got really hot in the late ’90s, and Schwarzenegger came in and some other guys came in, which was huge. That was the biggest star in the world at the time,” JBL said. “But in the mid ’90s, we couldn’t get anybody to come in. We couldn’t sell tickets. So to go from that to this, and all of a sudden now you’re arguing about if it’s too many celebrities. Good Lord, man, thank goodness these celebrities care enough.”
He noted the pattern is as old as the business.
“At different times, you’ve had wrestling get huge, and people wanted to get involved in wrestling,” JBL said, pointing back to the 1930s and 1950s before reaching the Hogan era. “One of Vince’s things that worked so successfully, and he took the same heat, was when he had all these celebrities for WrestleMania one, two and three. He ran all those guys out of business.”
For JBL, the ESPN deal is the clearest sign of how far things have moved.
“I watch ESPN all the time, or at least have it on in the background. Wrestling is on it nonstop, and they’re covering it. Just literally covering it, not tongue in cheek covering it,” JBL said. “It is unbelievable what wrestling has become, and I think it’s awesome. I hope Brady does do something.”
