John Cena Says The John Cena Classic Will Take Place In December

John Cena says the John Cena Classic will take place in December, putting a month on an event he had previously placed only in the back end of 2026.

Cena gave the timing on NBC’s TODAY show, where he described the event and its audience-vote format.

“Now this year in December, I’m really excited about announcing the John Cena Classic. We’re gonna do an event based off all the memory, all the nostalgia, and the IP and the core values of the character, which is me. Hustle, loyalty, respect, perseverance, virtue, overcoming the odds, and giving the vote to the people.

“Our audience is gonna decide our champion that night, so it’s a really unique live event. I don’t even know if it’s gonna work. I’m still taking bold chances in the WWE space, and I’m proud to be helping the John Cena Classic.”

Cena did not give a date or venue, and WWE has not announced either. False Finish first reported a December 12 target on August 21. Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the target date was still December 12, with the location and other details to be determined.

That is the same date WWE had announced a day earlier for Wrestlepalooza: Perth at RAC Arena in Western Australia, part of a weekend that also includes SmackDown on December 11 and Raw on December 14 at the same building. WWE has not said how the two events fit together.

Cena announced the Classic at WWE Backlash in May as a show of NXT talent against main roster talent, with a new championship decided by audience vote rather than by wins and losses. He told Extra in July that the event was targeted for the back end of 2026. At FanExpo Canada in August, he said WWE had settled the details and was keeping them secret. The doubt he voiced on TODAY is not new either. He said in May, the day after Backlash, that the Classic could be a failure, and he told WrestleRant in September that the Classic might fail and that saying so was the point.

The John Cena Classic fits a pattern from Cena’s final stretch in WWE. His retirement match, a submission loss to Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13, 2025, in Washington, D.C., came on the first edition of that show to include wrestlers from NXT and TNA. A tournament that puts NXT names against main roster wrestlers is another way to put younger talent on a bigger stage.

It also suits the ambassador role Cena has held with WWE since retiring, showing both what the company can do now and where it is headed. He has spent years promoting WWE’s global reach, including learning Mandarin to help the company grow in China.
