John Cena says WWE has settled the details of the John Cena Classic and is holding them back on purpose.
Nearly four months on from the announcement, WWE has not put out a date, a card or a format for the event. Cena was asked about it during his panel at FanExpo Canada in Toronto and declined to give anything up.
“I can’t say nothing right now,” Cena said. “I don’t want to leave you without an answer. Normally, I’d say, ‘We’re figuring out the details.’ I’ll say this: We have all the details. You just have to hang in there with me because they want me to keep it a secret until it’s time to say it. But we got a lot of information I’m gonna dump on you.”

Cena announced the John Cena Classic at Backlash on May 9 in Tampa. He described it as a single event built around exhibition matches between NXT talent and main roster talent, with a new championship carrying his name to be awarded at the end of it.
The part that drew the most attention was the voting. Cena said the audience would crown the champion, that every participant qualifies for the vote regardless of results, and that a wrestler could lose their match and still be voted champion. That drew criticism from fans who argued it would make wins and losses meaningless, and that heels would have no realistic path to the title in a popularity vote.
Cena has spent the months since walking it back into shape rather than defending it as announced. He told US Weekly that the reaction was polarising and that he liked the intrigue, but also that there is still a lot to be done and that the fan vote itself has to be figured out. He told The Takedown on SI that the shortest description of the event is WWE’s All-Star Game. He has acknowledged more than once that he dropped too much information in one five-minute segment at Backlash and that the concept was not complete when he announced it.
WWE has almost no history to fall back on here. Cyber Sunday, the only WWE pay-per-view built on fan voting, has not run since 2008, and the company has not said whether the Classic vote would be run through the website, the app or both. That is one of the details still outstanding four months on.
The template for the wrestling itself already exists. The December 13, 2025 Saturday Night’s Main Event, the show that closed Cena’s career, was built the same way, with NXT Champion Oba Femi against WWE Champion Cody Rhodes and Je’Von Evans and Leon Slater against AJ Styles and Dragon Lee. Cena has said that card meant more to him than his own retirement match on it, and several of the NXT wrestlers featured that night have since been used on the main roster. The Classic is that idea turned into a full event with a title at the end.
Fightful Select reported earlier this month that the event is still expected to happen this year, in December.
Cena wrestled his last match on that December 13 card, where he tapped out to Gunther. He hosted WrestleMania 42 in April and has said repeatedly since that he will not return to the ring, including at the same FanExpo Canada panel, where he told a crowd chanting for one more match that no promoter has the money to change his mind.
What the Classic gives him is a way to stay involved without wrestling on it. Nothing Cena has said about the event has put him in a match, and the format he described puts the wrestlers he wanted to showcase on his last night in the ring at the centre of it instead.
