Main Event For WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event Confirmed

The tag team match will go on last at Madison Square Garden. Michael Cole confirmed on The Sal Licata Show that CM Punk and Cody Rhodes against Gunther and Sami Zayn will close out WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event this Saturday, July 18.

“The main event on Saturday will be a tag team match with CM Punk, the WWE Champion, teaming with Cody Rhodes, the guy he meets at SummerSlam for the title, against Gunther and Sami Zayn,” Cole said.

Cole also laid out why all four men are in it.

“You’ve got CM Punk, who is the WWE Champion. Punk won the championship from Sami Zayn. Now Punk is going to team up with Cody Rhodes, who he faces at SummerSlam in a couple of weeks,” Cole said. “On the other side you’ve got Sami Zayn, who’s obviously upset over the fact that CM Punk took his championship from him and believes he should have a rematch.”

The match came together on the July 10 SmackDown. Zayn won the Undisputed WWE Championship in a triple threat over Rhodes and Gunther at Night of Champions, and Rhodes beat Jey Uso to earn the rematch before Gunther took him out on Raw. Punk stepped into the opening, beat Zayn in Chicago to end his reign at nine days, and then agreed to defend against Rhodes at SummerSlam. Gunther went to Nick Aldis demanding to be added to that title match. Instead, Aldis booked him and Zayn against Punk and Rhodes in New York, a decision Gunther answered by attacking him.

The rest of the card includes Paige and Brie Bella defending the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship against Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid, Danhausen vs. JD McDonagh in a No Disqualification match, Lyra Valkyria vs. Bayley, and an in-ring segment with World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns and New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson.

Saturday Night’s Main Event streams at 8 p.m. Eastern on Peacock in the United States and Netflix internationally. SummerSlam follows on August 1 and 2 in Minneapolis.
