With WWE promoting its upcoming “Unreal” series promising a look behind the creative curtain, Matt Hardy shared his thoughts on such shows on his “Extreme Life” podcast. He stated he doesn’t oppose pulling back the curtain in today’s wrestling landscape.
“I feel like there is a chunk of the audience that knows what it is. And they almost seem more immersed in the pro wrestling business because they have an idea… this is entertainment… They’re going for a certain reaction,” Hardy explained. “I think people are always going to be interested in the behind-the-scenes stuff… how do you arrive at the idea to have this rivalry happen, or this idea, or this finish…? So I don’t mind it. I think in this day and age, it’ll be intriguing.”
Referencing his own podcast where “secrets” are sometimes shared, Hardy said, “I have no idea how far this show will go… Is it going to go further than anything else has as far as really revealing the magic trick? I don’t know, it will be interesting to see, but I’m okay with it; it doesn’t bother me… I really don’t mind it, and I think it will be an intriguing show. And I’m really curious to see how far into the process are they going to take us?”
Addressing concerns that such shows might hinder fans from booing heels or cheering babyfaces appropriately, Hardy saw potential validity but also a positive outcome. “If you can make people care about these characters more, I think it’s going to do nothing but help their career… help the whole aspect of the business… the more you can get people to care about the individuals behind the characters too, I think it’s a big positive… I still believe… people need to care about who you are if they’re really gonna get emotionally invested…”
