Matt Hardy is not comfortable with how long the Women’s World Championship has gone undefended, and he still expects the champion to walk out with it.
Liv Morgan won the title at WrestleMania in April and defends it for the first time against IYO SKY at SummerSlam, more than 100 days later. Asked about that on the latest episode of The Extreme Life, Hardy did not dodge it.
“I mean, you hate to see it. You like to see those title defences at least be regular, no doubt about it.”
He raised the mitigating factor himself.
“But I think she was dealing with some injury scenarios, right? She’d been hurt part of the time during the deal.”
His broader position is that the gap is bad for the championship itself.
“I feel like it’s very important to have credibility for championships and titles. It is important to have them defended regularly, and I wish we could have had one in. At least they need to be defended monthly, I think, at a minimum. 100 days is a very, very long time to go.”
He still picked her to retain.
“With all that being said, I think Liv Morgan has a successful defence of her title in this match with IYO SKY.”
“I think Liv keeps it here.”
Asked why, Hardy pointed outside the wrestling business.
“IYO is great as well. I think Liv is kind of hitting that other level as far as even kind of being like a pop culture star, and she’s just doing different things, and I think they see a lot of potential in her to be a crossover star more than just a wrestling superstar.”
Morgan defends against SKY on Night One of SummerSlam. Paul “Triple H” Levesque said on ESPN’s First Take this week that the match might steal the entire weekend.
