Matt Hardy Names Michael Cole As The Greatest Full-time Play-By-Play Announcer Today

This week’s episode of “The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy” delved into the future of TNA, with Hardy reflecting on the promotion’s current trajectory and drawing comparisons to ECW. The conversation also touched upon the current landscape of wrestling commentary, with Hardy offering high praise for WWE’s Michael Cole.

“This is almost judging him over his whole body of work,” Hardy prefaced, before revealing his pick for the best play-by-play announcer in the business. “I mean, I would almost say the most consistent guy, which I really like a lot now, and I think he’s grown and he’s learned, and he has really embraced it, I would almost go with Michael Cole.”

Hardy highlighted Cole’s dedication to his craft and his evolution as a commentator. “He came from the news. I remember him being there, and he would always come to guys. He would ask them about things we were doing in the match. He would look for insight. Then once the more he got a grasp of pro wrestling, the better he became at it. He’s the head guy now that kind of runs things there when it comes to the announcers and whatnot. To me, he stands out.”

While acknowledging the legendary status of Jim Ross, Hardy emphasized Cole’s current prominence in the field. “You know, JR is there, and JR is obviously a classic, especially when he was younger and whatnot. JR had so many lines that stuck out. JR, even though he still does commentary from time to time, it’s not very often, but he’s great. Obviously he is getting very much towards the end of sitting behind the desk. Right now, for someone who is in their heyday and still a full-time guy, I would say Michael Cole.”

Shifting gears, Hardy also discussed a notable appearance backstage at the recent TNA Final Resolution pay-per-view: the return of AJ Styles.

“We saw AJ. He was backstage. It’s great to catch up with him. I’ve loved AJ since I first met him, and he’s always been a great guy. He’s one of the guys that’s never changed. A good southern boy like me and Jeff. So it’s always great to see good old Alan Jones. I mean, TNA is such a huge part of his life, and I’m sure that was great for him just to come there and see everyone, and visit with everyone, and catch up with people you haven’t seen in years.”
