Matt Hardy Says WWE Creative Didn’t Know What To Do With The Wyatt Sicks After Their Debut: ‘It Just Fizzled Out’

Matt Hardy has offered his take of why the Wyatt Sicks ultimately fell short in WWE despite a strong debut, suggesting the problem was less about the performers and more about a creative team that lacked the time and bandwidth to properly develop such a complex act.

Speaking on Extreme Life, Hardy was asked whether Bray Wyatt’s legacy was properly honored through the Wyatt Sicks and gave a candid breakdown of what went wrong.

“I felt like more than anything, he was honored on their debut. I felt like that was very much a love letter to Bray Wyatt. And I guess the fact that they ended up finding some success in winning the tag titles so they could be deemed as a successful act at that time, that was something that was beneficial to them. But when it was all said and done, it just really fizzled out. It’s just like the creative just didn’t know what to do with them. They didn’t know how to take them in a new direction or a different direction, or what to do with them. I mean, that’s how it felt from the outside looking obviously I don’t know, but those things can be tricky. I mean, I feel like if you have an act like that, you have to put a lot of time and thought into it, and maybe it’s too much time and too much thought for the people that are doing creative. Maybe they are overwhelmed and they don’t have the time to do that,” Hardy said.

He also reflected on what is required creatively to make a character that operates outside normal wrestling parameters work long term.

“There’s a lot of time and thought and effort that has to go into an act that is so special like that, because they have to be handled a certain way. You can’t be invincible. If you’re an invincible figure or character and you’re not vulnerable in any capacity, it’ll never work. You have to be vulnerable. That’s the only way you can get sympathy. There has to be a question. Like, what is going to happen? You can’t just be Thanos and snap and then the guy dies. You have to be vulnerable to a degree. And that was a flaw with the Fiend eventually,” Hardy said.

Hardy also closed his comments on the Wyatt Sicks with a heartfelt tribute to those who were released.

“I just want to say to all the Wyatt Sicks that are out there, thank you for busting your asses. To all the members that were there in Bray’s honor and Bray’s memory, continuing to allow the vision of something more than just pro wrestling, let the fantasy of Bray Wyatt and Broken Matt and the Leader of Worlds and Feed, let that fantasy continue to live on and exist in pro wrestling, because I think it’s an important part of the variety show. And I just appreciate all those guys being fully committed and going all in into their characters and their personas. And I love that in pro wrestling, and I wish them all success wherever they end up landing,” Hardy said.
