Paul Wight: Kane Is ‘One Of The Most Brilliant People I’ve Ever Met’

Paul Wight has spent decades sharing the ring and the locker room with some of wrestling’s biggest names, and the AEW star recently dished out a series of fun superlatives about his peers during a game of “Ringmates” with Sky Sports.

Asked to name the toughest wrestler he’s been around, Wight didn’t hesitate: John Cena. He pointed to a remarkable display of toughness following one of Cena’s neck procedures. “John Cena had neck surgery at 7am, and at three o’clock in the afternoon he came by the building to say hello to everybody,” Wight said. He marveled that Cena, who had his neck fused, made the rounds in under seven hours, calling it “pretty tough.” Wight added that he’s also seen Cena suffer an eye injury and still report to work the next day.

From there, Wight ran through a rapid-fire list of his fellow performers. He named Santino Marella as the funniest wrestler he’s been around, marveling that the man who makes everyone laugh is also a legitimate jiu-jitsu black belt. For best dressed, Wight pointed to Dave Bautista and his collection of designer suits and Versace shirts, while crowning Chris Jericho the best singer thanks to his band Fozzy’s anthem “Judas.” He also tabbed Ric Flair as the wrestler most likely to lead a crazy night out, joking you might wake up in a different country.

Wight handed out plenty of compliments when it came to brains. He called Adam Copeland incredibly smart with a memory “like a steel trap,” praised Billy Gunn as far more intelligent than his cowboy persona suggests, and singled out Glenn Jacobs, known to fans as Kane, as “one of the most brilliant people I’ve ever met.” When it came to the most reliable, Wight didn’t waver, naming Billy Gunn as a teammate who has always been there for others.

A few answers came at his own expense. Wight cheerfully named himself the worst-dressed wrestler, joking that he dresses like a high school football coach, as well as the worst singer and worst dancer. As for the best dancer, he revealed that Kenny Omega can surprisingly “cut quite the rug.” He also tipped his cap to Austin Gunn as a hidden grill master, raving about one of the best steaks he’s ever had.

Wight shared the answers while promoting AEW All In, which takes place at Wembley Stadium in London on August 30.
