CM Punk On WWE Title Win Years After Money In The Bank Win: ‘History Doesn’t Repeat Itself, But It Rhymes’

CM Punk is still processing the nature of his WWE Championship win, which came 15 years after a defining moment in the very same city. Last week on WWE Raw, he won the WWE Title from Sami Zayn after replacing Cody Rhodes, who was taken out by Gunther in a backstage attack.

On What’s Your Story? with Stephanie McMahon, the host marveled at the symmetry of Punk’s return to the top in Chicago. Punk won the WWE Title 15 years before at Money in the Bank from John Cena following his famous pipe bomb promo segment.

“Talk about a comeback 15 years later, in the same venue,” McMahon said.

Punk admitted he was taken aback by how perfectly it all came together.

“I’m flabbergasted at that. Just how we drew it up, just how we planned it,” Punk said.

When McMahon pointed out the old adage that lightning does not strike twice in the same spot, Punk offered a reflection of his own, one he had already worked into a promo.

“History doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes,” Punk said.
