Randy Orton took on Gunther in the finals of the King of the Ring Tournament at the WWE King and Queen of the Ring PLE in Saudi Arabia, where Gunther went over.
As a result of the win, he earned the right to challenge for the World Heavyweight Title at SummerSlam in August. There was controversy coming out of the show due to one of Orton’s shoulders being off the mat during the pinfall.
Coming out of that show, Triple H said in an interview that while he saw the replay, the referee’s call was final. He said that Orton deserves to have another shot at Gunther, and when he’s healed up, then it will happen.
According to CageMatch.net, Orton was 0-4 in singles matches at PLEs heading into the show. As a result of the loss to Gunther, he is now 0-5. His last singles match PLE win was over Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 37 in 2021.
It will be interesting to see who the World Champion will be by the time SummerSlam rolls around, whether that be Damian Priest or Drew McIntyre, because those two men will face off for the title at Clash at the Castle in Scotland.
