Rey Mysterio says he would take another world championship run if WWE put one in front of him. Mysterio was asked about it by Malcolm Muscle and did not rule it out.
“You never know. Never say never. I think I’ve proven myself to still be able to compete, whoever they put in front of me,” Mysterio said to Muscle Man Malcolm. “So I’m down to have another title run. Just put it in front of me and I’ll take advantage of it. Trust me.”
It has been a while. Mysterio won the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 22 in 2006, in the three-way with Kurt Angle and Randy Orton that followed Eddie Guerrero’s death, and held it until that July. His only other world title came on the July 25, 2011 episode of Raw, where he beat The Miz to win the vacant WWE Championship and lost it to John Cena later that same night.
He is 51, was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2023, and has spent the past two years splitting his time between WWE and AAA, where he took over as General Manager after WWE bought the promotion.
The AAA role has put him in the ring more than the WWE schedule has. It also put him on a stretcher on Friday in storyline.
Mysterio main evented night one of TripleMania 34 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena against Omos, with Omos reinstated in AAA if he won and banned for life if he lost. Mysterio had El Grande Americano in his corner and Omos had Dominik Mysterio and AAA president Dorian Roldan. Mysterio hit the 619 and a frog splash and got a two count, and the finish came out of the chaos at ringside. Americano came back out to encourage him, Dominik went after Americano with a chair, Mysterio kicked his son away, and Omos caught him coming back in with a big boot and a chokeslam for the pin.
Omos kept going afterwards. Medical staff came in and strapped Mysterio to a stretcher, and Omos came back, cleared the announce table, lifted Mysterio and the stretcher together and put both through it.
He was back on Sunday. Mysterio came down the aisle at Arena CDMX in a neck brace and a referee’s shirt during the main event of night two, where Dominik was defending the AAA Mega Championship against El Grande Americano under no disqualification rules. The match had already lost its referee, and JD McDonagh, Omos and Liv Morgan had all got involved trying to keep the title on Dominik. Americano hit a diving headbutt with nobody to count it, and Mysterio ran in and counted the three himself.
That ended Dominik’s reign at 367 days, on his fourth defence. He had told Omos earlier in the show to stay backstage because he wanted to win on his own.
The two nights are the same story read in order. Dominik cost his father the match on Friday, and his father counted him out of a championship on Sunday, wearing the brace he needed because of it.
Mysterio’s own position at AAA is unchanged. Omos is reinstated, which was the stipulation, and Mysterio remains General Manager. He has not said anything publicly about the state he was left in.
Night two also produced two other title changes, with La Catalina ending Flammer’s record run as Reina de Reinas Champion and the Wagner Brothers taking the AAA World Tag Team Championship from the War Raiders in an open challenge. Rey Fenix retained the AAA World Cruiserweight Championship in a four-way.
Mysterio debuted in Mexico at 14 and has been wrestling for more than 35 years. Whether WWE puts a world title in front of him again is a question for WWE, and his next televised appearance there has not been announced.
