Seth Rollins has a title match of his own to worry about this weekend, but the SummerSlam bout he keeps coming back to belongs to somebody else.
Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Rollins said Nick Aldis facing Gunther is the match he is most curious about, for the simple reason that nobody knows what Aldis has left.
“I think anytime anybody’s coming off of a long hiatus and has never really laced up the boots inside a WWE ring, there’s a ton of intrigue. So actually, the Gunther/Aldis match is one that kind of has my attention.”
“I think there’s the mystery of what does Nick Aldis have in the tank.”
Rollins then landed on something that had clearly caught him off guard.
“We see Aldis in the shirt every week on Friday. He looks fantastic. He looks full, the chest, he looks great. And he’s not even 40 years old. He’s still younger than I am actually, which shocked me. I didn’t know that.”
He is right on both counts. Aldis is 39 and turns 40 in November. Rollins turned 40 in May, which makes Aldis the younger man by roughly five months despite having spent the past three years in a suit while Rollins has been working a full schedule.
“Let’s see what he’s got. It’s really his WWE debut and it’s on a massive stage. I’m really looking forward to seeing that.”
The match was made on July 19, when Paul “Triple H” Levesque booked it at the SummerSlam Kickoff event at Fanatics Fest in New York following a brawl between the two. It followed weeks of friction that boiled over at Saturday Night’s Main Event, where Aldis inserted himself into the main event and cost Gunther and Sami Zayn their match.
It will be the first WWE match of Aldis’ career. He signed with the company in 2023 and has been an authority figure since, with his last match anywhere coming that same year. Before WWE he had a two-decade run in the ring, holding the TNA World Heavyweight Championship as Magnus and the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship twice, including a reign that ran beyond a thousand days.
Rollins challenges Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship on Night Two of SummerSlam on Sunday, August 2. Both nights run from U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
