Shawn Michaels Reveals “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig Came Up With The “Heartbreak Kid” Name

Shawn Michaels has revealed that it was “Mr. Perfect” Curt Hennig who first coined the “Heartbreak Kid” name during a color commentary appearance, and that the nickname took on a life of its own from there.

Speaking with Triple H in a sit-down conversation for Variety, Michaels walked through the evolution of his singles character after The Rockers split, starting with the early concept that WWE’s creative services department had drawn up for him.

“There was still a form of creative services, and someone had drawn up this biker guy with the glasses and sort of my first original look. But they wanted to call me the Idol first. It was gonna be Shawn Michaels the Idol, but then it was just gonna go straight to the Idol. And that just really scared me, because I didn’t want to ever stop being Shawn Michaels.”

Michaels said he pushed back on the name change while embracing the look, and from there, the character developed organically over time through music, presentation, and his own promos.

The pivotal moment came when Hennig dropped the phrase during commentary.

“Hennig mentions the Heartbreak Kid during color commentary one time.”

Triple H was surprised: “Who did it? I never knew where that came from.”

“Curt Hennig, not shocking,” Michaels confirmed. “Well, it’s in a Chris LeDoux song. ‘Used to be a moonlight bandit, used to be a Heartbreak Kid.’ When he first told me about it, I was like, all right, you pitch yourself being, I don’t know, tougher, more rugged. And I wasn’t sure. But then I was just doing a promo one time, and all of a sudden, one of those things where you don’t really know what you’re saying, and it just comes out. From that point on, it kind of stuck.”

Michaels said the character worked because it was rooted in a version of himself that he could access in the moment, even if it did not fully reflect who he was in real life.

“As somebody who knows me in real life, I don’t have that much coolness. For that moment in that place out there, I could do it. And so it just all seemed to work.”
