On Friday Night’s episode of SmackDown, it was announced that Bray Wyatt would be defending the Universal Championship against Goldberg. The match was made when Goldberg simply declared that Wyatt was next.
The match announcement left many fans wondering if this match was booked so that Goldberg could win the title and face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania. Goldberg fans might point out that a match with Reigns would make sense if they wanted to hype the encounter as “spear vs. spear.” Wyatt fans would argue that a loss would derail his momentum and it’s too soon for him to lose the title.
At this point, it does not look like Wyatt will be losing the title so, either WWE is planning on having Goldberg lose at Super ShowDown or they will do something else to avoid having Goldberg lose (perhaps a DQ) while having Wyatt keep the title.
Dave Meltzer noted on the Wrestling Observer forum that, as of today, the plan is still for Wyatt to defend his title against Reigns at WrestleMania. So, unless Vince McMahon changes his mind in the next couple of weeks, don’t expect to see Goldberg walking out of Super ShowDown as the Universal Championship.
Goldberg is working the show because the Saudi Crown prince was a wrestling fan in the 90s and Goldberg is one of the names he likes. Goldberg was paid $2 million for his match with The Undertaker last year in Saudi Arabia and he’s likely getting a similar payday for his upcoming match with Wyatt.
