AJ Styles thought Omos should be studying old Rey Mysterio footage before the two meet at TripleMania 34, because Mysterio has spent his whole career beating men that size. Styles brought the match up unprompted on the latest episode of The AJ Styles Show.
“One of the biggest professional wrestlers in the world, if not the biggest, is going against the Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio,” Styles said. “Smaller. Not a mini. He’s not a mini, but he is one of the smaller wrestlers in professional wrestling. Holy crap.”
He said the size difference is the reason to be optimistic rather than worried.
“You know what the crazy thing is? I’m expecting something awesome, because Rey has done this before. He’s been in these matches his whole life,” Styles said. “So the one thing that Omos should be watching is old tapes of Rey Mysterio and what he could do to him.”
Styles then put a label on it. “Rey Mysterio, GOAT of lucha libre,” he said.
The match took place on night one of TripleMania 34 on Friday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Paradise, Nevada. Omos went over in the main event.
Mysterio came up in lucha libre working men far bigger than him and carried the same formula through WCW, WWE and back into AAA, and the matches Styles is telling Omos to study run from the late 1990s to the present day. Omos is billed at seven foot three, which puts him at the far end of a list Mysterio has been working through for close to thirty years.
Mysterio is AAA’s General Manager. He suspended Omos indefinitely after the August 22 episode of Lucha Libre AAA on Fox, where Omos kept attacking Galeno after their match was thrown out, then chokeslammed Mysterio when he stepped in to stop it. Omos turned up at ringside at Ola de Calor in Edinburg, Texas on August 30 holding a ticket he had bought, and the brawl that followed led to the match being made.
That arrangement gets stranger on night two, when Dominik defends the AAA Mega Championship against El Grande Americano at Arena CDMX in Mexico City on September 13.
WWE owns AAA, and this is the second TripleMania run under that ownership. It is also the first TripleMania held in the United States since 1996, and the show was moved to the MGM Grand Garden Arena in July after originally being booked for the Luxor.
