There Is Backstage Hope That John Cena’s Backlash News Is Bigger Than Rumored Announcement

There may be more to John Cena’s Backlash announcement than previously reported, with WrestleVotes revealing that some within WWE are hoping it goes beyond anything related to Club WWE.

WrestleVotes posted on Twitter that there was internal hope backstage at SmackDown on Friday that Cena’s announcement tonight reaches beyond the Club WWE connection that had been reported earlier in the week, while also noting that if the Club WWE direction is the plan, it has been kept unusually quiet.

“Backstage at SmackDown last night, there was some internal hope that tonight’s historic announcement from John Cena goes beyond anything Club WWE related. That said, according to one source, if that’s the direction, it’s been kept very quiet behind the scenes,” WrestleVotes wrote.

WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select had previously reported that the expectation within WWE circles was that the announcement was tied to the upcoming Club WWE launch and that Cena being the face of it would be a boost. However, the new note introducing the possibility of something bigger leaves the door open for a more impactful reveal than a membership program launch.

Cena has been teasing the announcement since April 23 and described it this week as something that will shock the very foundation of WWE from its fans to its superstars, from its champions to its rookies.

Backlash takes place tonight at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa, Florida streaming on ESPN in the United States and Netflix internationally, with a start time of 6 p.m. ET. The full Backlash card is as follows:

  • World Heavyweight Championship: Roman Reigns (c) vs. Jacob Fatu
  • IYO SKY vs. Asuka
  • Danhausen and mystery partner vs. The Miz and Kit Wilson
  • John Cena history-making announcement
  • Seth Rollins vs. Bron Breakker (ESPN 2)
  • United States Championship: Trick Williams (c) vs. Sami Zayn (ESPN 2)
