The Three Reasons WWE Is Running More House Shows This Summer

WWE’s expanded summer house show schedule was the subject of a town hall discussion this week, with Triple H and Nick Khan personally explaining the rationale to staff and pointing to in-ring experimentation as one of the key drivers, per a new PWInsider report.

The reporting expands on what the Wrestling Observer Newsletter previously shared as WWE’s internal justification for the schedule. Per PWInsider, Triple H and Nick Khan told staff that house shows are not only important for younger talent to get reps in front of crowds, but can also be used as a testing ground to experiment with creative ideas and try different in-ring approaches in front of different audiences before committing to them on televised programming.

WWE leadership also stressed the importance of finding the right balance on the schedule. Per PWInsider, the company is aware of injury risk and wants to avoid running the older veteran tier into the ground while still giving the next-generation main eventers enough reps to develop.

The schedule itself features 10 main roster house shows across July and August, on Thursdays and weekends, hitting markets in New Mexico, Pennsylvania, California, Illinois, Virginia, New Hampshire, Georgia, and South Carolina. Cody Rhodes, Oba Femi, Rhea Ripley, Seth Rollins, Jade Cargill, Trick Williams, and Drew McIntyre are advertised for the tour. Ticket prices are expected to be significantly lower than televised WWE events.

JBL on Something to Wrestle and Matt Hardy on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy have separately said in recent weeks that the modern WWE roster cannot yet call matches on the fly the way the previous generation could, and that more house shows are the only way to teach them.

Sami Zayn, Cody Rhodes, and Jeff Jarrett have all publicly endorsed the return of house shows, each citing the developmental case for the next-generation main-event tier. Bobby Lashley and others have separately said the touring schedule needs to be calibrated for veteran wear and tear, which aligns with what WWE leadership told the town hall this week.
