Vince McMahon declined to give Rey Mysterio a raise during contract talks

News broke on late Sunday night that Rey Mysterio is not under contract with WWE but remains working for the company.

Back in May, WWE did an angle where Seth Rollins sent Mysterio’s eye into a steep step that was part of an injury storyline. At the time, the reason for this angle was to write Mysterio out of storylines in case he didn’t sign a new contract.

The latest update on Mysterio’s status comes from Dave Meltzer, who noted on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio that Mysterio’s contract expired months ago. However, WWE officials decided to continue the storyline between Rollins and Mysterio despite the future WWE Hall of Famer not signing a new deal.

Per the report, Mysterio wanted a raise as part of his new deal, but WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon declined to give him that as he mentioned the current situation that the company is in due to COVID-19. Back in April, WWE made budget cuts by releasing several wrestlers and staff.

It was later noted that WWE wants to sign Mysterio to a new deal because they don’t want him to leave. Thus, the two sides are still working on a new agreement.

Meltzer brought up the unlikely possibility that if Mysterio wanted to appear for other promotions such as Impact Wrestling or AEW he could because he’s not under contract with WWE.

As noted, Mysterio wrestled at the All Out pay-per-view before signing a new deal with WWE in September 2018 for what was believed to be a two-year deal. At the time of his signing, there was an opt-out clause in the deal that would let him get out of the deal after 18 months.

WWE is still planning to book Mysterio vs. Rollins at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view event later this month with an “Eye for an Eye” stipulation. The only way you can win the contest is by taking out your opponent’s eye.

Towards the end of the clip, which you can listen to down below, Meltzer speculated about the possibility of Mysterio going to AEW although that is NOT confirmed and pure speculation.
