WWE considered a title change for AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe at SummerSlam

The WWE Championship match between AJ Styles and Samoa Joe was one of the highlights of SummerSlam. Everyone, including Styles’ wife and daughter, played their role perfectly and their feud has turned into one of the best things on Smackdown Live in a long time.

Joe has also done an excellent job on with his promos and they stand out because everything he says doesn’t sound scripted and contrived, as is often the case with others in the company.

Apparently, WWE management sees Joe as a top guy because there was talk of Joe winning the WWE Championship at SummerSlam. The word about those plans leaked out to PWInsider’s Mike Johnson and he mentioned it during a recent audio show.

“There was a consideration to Joe winning the belt but that is not the final finish that they went with,” Johnson said.

I guess this explains why they did the disqualification finish. They wanted to continue the feud but they didn’t want Joe or Styles to get pinned. As you can see below, the feud continued on Smackdown Live when Joe attacked Styles during an interview segment. Presumably, this will lead to another match at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view.
