WWE has been on a roll with a steady stream of excellent NXT specials and the excellent matches in the Cruiserweight Classic. During this week’s NXT tapings, they announced that the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic would be returning and the finals would culminate during the NXT Takeover show on Survivor Series weekend.
The Cruiserweight Classic is over and there seems to be a thirst for more of that type of wrestling. Several months ago, The Wrestling Observer newsletter reported that there was talk of doing a tournament with women after the CWC finished up. This week, those rumors flared up again.
The idea would be similar to the CWC with the competitors being women that are not currently signed to WWE deals. I think it’s a great idea and it gives the talent an opportunity to shine in front of WWE management and hopefully, some of them end up with contracts. The Raw and Smackdown women’s divisions are thin and could use some more names in the mix.
My guess is that if/when this tournament takes place, then we’ll see names like Santana Garrett, Rachael Ellering and Tessa Blanchard. Ellering had her name changed to Rachael Fazio and she worked at the recent NXT tapings so that could be an indication that they want to sign her. To my knowledge, while they have appeared on some recent NXT tapings, those three women have yet to sign a full-time deal with WWE.
