WWE delayed angle to set up big SummerSlam title match on Monday’s Raw

It turns out that Vince McMahon decided to hold off on shooting an angle for a big title match that is scheduled to take place at this year’s SummerSlam.

Dave Meltzer noted on the latest Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE was originally going to do an angle involving WWE Champion Drew McIntyre and Randy Orton on Monday’s episode of Raw.

Although that match is still scheduled to take place at SummerSlam, WWE decided to book a rematch between McIntyre and Dolph Ziggler for next week’s Raw.

This is a rematch from Sunday’s Extreme Rules pay-per-view event that saw McIntyre successfully retain the WWE Title. Ziggler vs. McIntyre is booked for the Raw episode with McIntyre slated to reveal the stipulation right before the match starts.

The belief is that WWE will shoot the angle for McIntyre vs. Orton on next week’s episode of Raw to set up their title match at SummerSlam. The episode was also taped on Monday night. Thus, WWE wanted to do the rematch before shooting the angle for McIntyre vs. Orton.

As noted, various plans changed for Monday’s episode of Raw as McMahon reportedly tore up the script and caused the TV tapings to be delayed.
