WWE had to take a detour from the path they wanted for the feud with Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns heading into WrestleMania 38 once their match at Day 1 was nixed due to Reigns testing positive for COVID-19.
Lesnar ended up winning the WWE Title at Day 1, which made both stars have the top titles in the company. It’s been reported for months that WWE has been planning for at least three matches between Reigns and Lesnar – Crown Jewel, Day 1, and WrestleMania.
Dave Meltzer noted during the mailbag portion of the latest Wrestling Observer Radio that while there is speculation among fans of WWE doing a champion vs. champion match between Lesnar and Reigns at Mania, that’s not the plan. This comes after their SmackDown segment two weeks ago where they teased it happening.
“I was told no. That they just did it because those two guys had the belt at the time. So it made sense to do it at the time. But, at the time, that was not the direction that they were planning on…Lesnar and Reigns are going to have a match. I think we’ll have a lot better idea of what’s gonna happen after the Royal Rumble. But, if Seth wins and then Lesnar’s wrestling Roman, I would presume Roman beats him to win a belt back. Because Lesnar’s not going to be around long-term and Roman will be around every week. And then Rollins, I don’t know what their plans are as far as how long he would go long-term. They could have Big E beat him or they could just keep Seth going. They could have Lashley or… Kevin Owens. I mean there’s a lot of different ways they can go.”
WWE has already confirmed that Reigns will defend the Universal Title against Seth Rollins at the Royal Rumble while at this same show, Lesnar will make his first defense of the WWE Title in this latest reign as champion in a dream match against Bobby Lashley.
