In the second match of WWE NXT TakeOver 36, Raquel Gonzalez put her NXT Women’s Championship on the line against her former friend Dakota Kai.
Kai started out by slapping Gonzalez in the face. It was back and forth for a couple of minutes until Gonzalez took control of the match with some fallaway slams. Kai tried a crossbody off the top but Gonzalez rolled through it and then pressed and dropped Kai onto the top turnbuckle. Gonzalez started favoring her right arm after the press slam.
Gonzalez was rocked by a corner kick to the face that knocked her out of the ring. Gonzalez was almost counted out but Kai brought her in the ring for a pin attempt. Kai hit a flurry of offense for a couple of minutes here but Gonzalez fought back with clotheslines, a boot and an overhead slam that dropped Kai on her face. Gonzalez followed up with an elbow off the middle rope into a pin attempt.
Kai worked on Gonzalez’s arm but Gonzalez countered with a powerbomb into a pin attempt. Kai came back at Gonzalez but then Gonzalez picked her up and dropped her on the top rope, knocking Kai to the ramp outside of the ring. Back in the ring, Gonzalez no-sold a kick to the jaw but Kai followed up with the Kairopractor (a version of the Backstabber) into a pin attempt.
Gonzalez tried a chokeslam but Kai tried to counter but something was messed up and Gonzalez slipped through the ropes. Back in the ring, Kai hit a double stomp off the top rope into a pin attempt. Gonzalez recovered and picked up Kai and rammed her stomach first into the top turnbuckle. Gonzalez tied a move off the top but Kai slipped out and kicked Gonzalez in the jaw. Kai tried a running Yakuza kick but Gonzalez hit the Chingona Bomb off the top. That was enough for the pin. Gonzalez retained.
After the match, former NXT UK Women’s Champion Kay Lee Ray walked out so it looks like she is next in line to challenge Gonzalez.
