WWE Champion CM Punk and Cody Rhodes vs. Gunther and Sami Zayn (Gunther and Zayn are added to the SummerSlam title match if they win) took place at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event from Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York.
It was back and forth in the early going before Sami and Gunther beat down Cody. Sami missed a big boot in the corner and Punk got the hot tag and hit a clothesline off the top rope. Punk with a knee strike in the corner then the bulldog. Punk was bleeding from the bridge of his nose. Punk with an elbow drop off the top rope then locked in the anaconda device. Cody put Gunther in the figure four leg lock Gunther poked Punk’s eyes, allowing Sami out and to attack Cody. Sami with a suplex in the corner. Sami with a big boot in the corner. Cody hit the cross rhodes to Sami before Gunther hit Cody with a clothesline. Punk with a GTS to Gunther. Gunther sent Punk into Cody and put him in a sleeper. Cody got the tag and hit a crossrhodes to Gunther for 2 as Sami broke it up and the referee was taken out. Punk with the GTS to Sami. Cody accidentally took out Punk and Gunther hit Cody with a big boot. Gunther hit Cody in the face with the title. Gunther with a powerbomb to Cody for 2 as a new referee ran out. Nick Aldis came out and pulled the referee out of the ring. Aldis hit Gunther with the title and Punk hit Gunther with the GTS. Cody pinned Gunther for the win.
