Opening segment
AJ Styles came out to the ring. He talked about his victory over Kevin Owens at SummerSlam and then attempted to change his focus to the U.S. Championship Open Challenge. Kevin Owens came out. Styles said that Owens will not get a title match because he already lost at SummerSlam. Shane McMahon came out. Owens argues that he had Styles pinned at SummerSlam but McMahon reminded him that Styles had a foot on the bottom rope. Owens got in McMahon’s face and demanded his title because he feels that Styles is a joke of a champion. Styles called Owens a whiny ass little bitch and offered to wrestle Owens tonight. McMahon was reluctant but he granted Owens the match. Owens wanted a special referee and Styles was fine with it because he can beat him and it doesn’t matter to him who the referee is. McMahon said that this will be Owens’ last shot at the title and there will be no more excuses.
Backstage, Daniel Bryan was on the phone. He said that there will be a few big surprises on the show. The Sing Brothers stepped in and bragged about Jinder Mahal’s title defense. Mahal then stepped in. Bryan said that Mahal can’t win a match without help so tonight, Shinsuke Nakamura will have a chance at retribution because he will wrestle both Singh Brothers.

He said that everything that he touches and everything that he has done has been box office. Now, he says, Smackdown Live has gone from being great to absolutely glorious.

Carmella and Natalya vs. Becky Lynch and Naomi

Dolph Ziggler backstage interview. He said that he’s been watching WWE TV and he now knows what it takes to be a star in WWE. He said that he’ll start singing, playing guitar, or maybe rapping. He said that he’ll get lasers and a big fancy robe because that’s what it takes and he’ll have a beautiful woman escorting him to the ring. He’ll have a woman that glows in the dark because that’s what it takes. But it won’t be until next week.
They cut to the locker room area and Lana is on the phone. She said “see you next week” to whoever she was talking with. Tamina steps on the screen. She tells Tamina to close her eyes. She tells her to take the feelings of being ignored and laughed at and use that to let her anger boil over. Lana said that now they will bash the bullies and crush the competition as the ravishing reign of terror begins. Lana says that they will not stop until Tamina wins the title because she is the most feared woman on Smackdown Live.
AJ Styles runs into Baron Corbin backstage. Styles said that Corbin will have an opportunity if he answers the U.S. Open challenge because the challenge will be open every week.
Corbin goes out to the ring to be the special referee.

Kevin Owens vs. AJ Styles for the U.S. Championship – special referee: Baron Corbin
These two were having a good match but things started to fall apart when Corbin shoved Styles and fast counted him. Styles was able to kick out. Shane McMahon ran down and argued with Corbin. Owens hit a low blow and went for the pin but McMahon pulled Corbin out of the ring. Corbin was fed up with McMahon so he handed him the referee shirt. McMahon put it on and declared himself as the new referee. Styles recovered and hit the Phenomenal Forearm and pinned him. Styles is still the U.S. Champion.
That’s all for this week.
