The New Day is still technically a group as Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston represent the faction as a tag team on Monday Night Raw while Big E is on SmackDown while he continues his singles run.
WWE separated the group during last year’s Draft. The New Day took on Shinsuke Nakamura, Cesaro, and Sheamus in their farewell match as a trio on the October 16th episode of SmackDown.
Big E said in an interview with talkSPORT that Vince McMahon had proposed splitting up the group in 2019 after Kingston ended his run as WWE Champion.
He noted that there were rumors for a while that certain things were pitched to break them up. He thinks because they had been so adamant about not wanting to be broken up that it made some people in WWE think they shouldn’t go through with the idea.
“I can’t really divulge the conversation, but even from the top of the business, the very head of what we do – you know exactly who I’m talking about – he directly told us, ‘Hey, this is the idea’, and we said, ‘We’re not feeling it’. This was post-KofiMania. There were people who wanted it earlier (than that) as well.
If we’d done it, we would have missed out on so many great moments. I still think that doing it now or soon, there are great moments to come and we have a lot more to offer. I think you’ve seen happy, clappy New Day for a very long time.”
Big E thinks there’s a lot of things the group can do including teasing tension among the members or having a friendly rivalry.
