Michael Cole leaving the announcers table for a backstage role?

Over the last few years, Michael Cole’s backstage role within WWE has increased. In addition to his role as lead commentator for Monday Night Raw and pay-per-views, he also has a hand in the production of the shows and he works with the talent at the Performance Center and Cole was the person that recommended Nigel McGuinness for the United Kingdom Championship Tournament. I would like to add that Cole did some of his best work over the weekend during the tournament.

PWInsider Elite noted that there has been more talk about Cole transitioning away from the announce table as he is becoming more and more interested in doing more behind the scenes work for the company. There is no word on when the transition will happen but the talk has picked up in recent weeks.

Cole was signed in 1997 at the suggestion of Todd Pettengill and worked primarily as a backstage interviewer before being added to the announce table for the debut of Smackdown in 1999. His full-time run on Smackdown ended when he was drafted to Raw in 2008 during the draft and he basically became their lead announcer when Jim Ross was moved from Raw.
