Gimmicks are a part of the wrestling business and they’re a treasured commodity. Nobody wants to see a former worker going to a competitor and making them money using the intellectual property you created. However, that has happened in the past which is why there are contracts in place for such matters.
Jim Cornette said he’s talked GFW not to sue anyone over their gimmick in the future, but it’s probably too late for The Hardy Boyz and their Broken Universe at this point. WWE has also been in the game of keeping names and characters when a worker decides to leave the company. They’ve done it many times in the past like when they didn’t let Cody keep his family’s last name when he decided to leave the company.
Hurricane Helms recently spoke to Lance Storm and Cyrus on Killing The Town where he was asked why he got to keep the Hurricane name when he left Vince’s Circus Of Suplexes.
Lance Storm asked if WWE just doesn’t care because Helms isn’t using the Hurricane name on someone else’s TV show. “Yeah, I think that’s pretty much it” Hurricane replied. “You know I didn’t go out on any bad terms. You know, I left on good terms and I never went on one of these tirades where I just bashed everybody for no reason. I didn’t have anything bad to say either, you know? If I had bad things to say I defiantly would have said them. I don’t think that anybody thinks I’m a guy that holds back. I didn’t have a lot of bad things to say about them so it wasn’t a problem.”
“And I changed my gear up just a bit” Helms continued. “I don’t use their logo which was the ‘H’ with the fins, you know? I put my own logo, my own spin on it and I go by Hurricane Helms instead of The Hurricane. You know so, there’s ways to get around it but I think the big part was that I just wasn’t a d-ck and got out there and blasted Vince every chance I got.”
Hurricane should be a lesson for all future instances like this. If you keep WWE happy, then there’s a much better chance they’ll be nicer to you.
