Rey Mysterio has struck a deal to join the new Aro Lucha promotion as a co-owner and performer, according to a story in The Tennessean.
The story notes that there are plans for a crowdfunding campaign that would give fans a minority stake in the company. Co-founder and CEO Jason Brown said that the first season will begin taping in Nashville in the coming months. Former WWE/TNA/WCW wrestlers Ron and Don Harris are also co-founders.
“I think what we are doing with Aro Lucha being fan-owned is revolutionary,” Mysterio said. “We are giving the fans something they have never had before, a voice and a chance to get in on the action.”
Konnan will head the creative department. The company hasn’t found a television partner but they are looking at distributing the show as widely as possible and they would look at the possibility of selling the television advertising. In other words, a deal similar to what Impact Wrestling has with Pop TV. They get airtime but very little advertising revenue.
The Tennessean article mentioned the Mysterio to WWE rumors but it did not elaborate on what this new venture means for his WWE future. It’s possible that this could mean the end of his WWE talks.
