WWE has a rich history of managers like Bobby Heenan, Jim Cornette, Brother Love, Sable, Jimmy Hart, Paul Bearer and more but it’s been a while since WWE’s roster was full of managers. It used to be hard to find a pro wrestler without a manager and now it seems the practice has almost vanished.
Zelina Vega is doing an amazing job accompanying Andrade Cien Almas to the ring but her role expands well beyond what a traditional manager does. Lana worked well with Rusev but that partnership is no longer a thing on-screen and Zeb Colter is no longer a part of the WWE picture. Paul Heyman isn’t a manager either as he’ll proudly declare to anyone that he’s an advocate instead.
Maybe it has to do with the fact that a sports entertainer needs to be more well-rounded at this point so they can cut their own promos. But there could be a much more obvious reason.
One fan noticed a lack of managers in WWE and asked Wrestling Observer Newsletter author Dave Meltzer why managers aren’t a thing anymore and his reply was quite simple.
Much like any other number of decisions in WWE, it all comes down to what Vince McMahon wants. Apparently, McMahon changed his mind on the idea of a roster with so many managers for some reason and that’s just the way it is now.
